The Detroit Tigers may have had a slow start to their offseason, but they’ve made some impressive strides following their postseason exit against the Seattle Mariners. By bringing in Kenley Jansen, the MLB’s active saves leader, and securing top starter Framber Valdez from the free-agent market, the Tigers have bolstered their roster significantly.
Re-signing key players was also a priority. The Tigers managed to keep reliever Kyle Finnegan, starter Jack Flaherty, and second baseman Gleyber Torres in the fold. Flaherty chose to exercise his player option, while Torres accepted his qualifying offer, ensuring their return to Detroit.
As Spring Training kicks off, Torres shared his thoughts on staying with the team, emphasizing the sense of belonging he felt from day one. “Last year was a really good year for me,” Torres noted.
“I felt at home from the first day. I felt really good.
I know the group. I know as an organization, they really want to compete.
What happened last year showed us what we want in the future.”
Torres made a strong impact in his first season away from the Bronx, earning an All-Star nod for the first time since his consecutive appearances in 2018 and 2019. Despite cooling off in the second half due to injury, he wrapped up the year with a 2.9 WAR, 136 hits, 16 home runs, and 74 RBIs, along with a .256 batting average.
Looking ahead to the 2026 season, Torres, alongside stars like Tarik Skubal and Valdez, will be key in proving Detroit’s mettle as title contenders in the American League. The Tigers are set to kick off their season on March 26 against the San Diego Padres, eager to showcase their revamped lineup.
