Cardinals-Mariners 2-For-1 Trade Idea Sends All-Star Infielder To Seattle

The Seattle Mariners need to make some moves this offseason if they want to get back to the American League Championship Series and beyond. After losing Jorge Polanco, the Mariners need to make a move for an infielder.

This need is even bigger considering the fact that Eugenio Suárez was still sitting in free agency as of Thursday. The Mariners need to make a splash to stay at the top of the AL.

Cardinals-Mariners 3-For-1 Trade Idea Has All-Star Landing in Seattle

Jackson Roberts of Fastball OnSi predicted the Mariners would swing a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals to acquire All-Star infielder Brendan Donovan.

“Donovan and Arizona Diamondbacks superstar Ketel Marte have been the two main pieces the Mariners have been connected to on the trade market as of late,” Roberts wrote. “And in addition to Marte’s decreasing likelihood of being dealt, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic suggested Monday that Donovan’s positional versatility might increase his appeal to Seattle.

Cardinals Predicted To Cut Ties With Fan Favorite All-Star In Trade

“While the Boston Red Sox have continued to be rumored as suitors for Donovan, the Mariners make the most sense by far, and their pitching prospects should appeal to a St. Louis team desperate to uncover young talent in the rotation to accelerate its rebuild.”

The Mariners are the perfect landing spot for Donovan.

They need an infielder to play second base, and Donovan would fill that hole. But Donovan also has the positional versatility to slide to third base or the corner outfield spots if Colt Emerson emerges as the team’s second baseman of the future.

The Mariners also have plenty of pitching depth to trade from. A deal centered around Logan Evans would seemingly make sense for both sides
