New York Liberty basketball star Sabrina Ionescu credits her family for inspiring her WNBA success, and she’s especially grateful for her twin brother, who pushed her to improve her skills when they were children.

The ex-Oregon women’s college basketball phenom is one of the Liberty’s most important players, teaming up with MVP Breanna Stewart to form an up-tempo WNBA title challenger that could prove the greatest obstacle for the Las Vegas Aces superteam in 2023.
Ionescu made her second WNBA All-Star team this year, averaging 17 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game while shooting a career-best 44.8 percent from beyond the arc.
She’s also embraced the spotlight amid a spike in viewership for women’s basketball; the former first-round pick now has her own line of Nike shoes and is on the cover of the popular NBA 2K video game series.

Who is Sabrina Ionescu’s twin brother?
Sabrina Ionescu’s twin brother is named Eddy Ionescu. They were born on December 6, 1997. The 6-foot-6, 190-pound lover of basketball grew up with Sabrina Ionescu in Northern California, and the siblings have shared a close relationship from childhood into adulthood.
The pair would play heated one-on-one basketball games that Sabrina Ionescu has said helped toughen her up for later challenges in her career. Off the court, though, they have usually gotten along well.
“They always felt comfort with each other,” said their father, Dan Ionescu, in an ESPN feature. “If they would see something scary, a dog or something, they would reach at each other’s hands, not at our hands as parents.”
Added Sabrina Ionescu: “We’re built-in best friends. Being able to grow up, have the same friends, play the same sports and do everything together is really fun. We were always so competitive, and I think it’s ’cause we were the same age. Everything was fair game.”

One of the most famous parts of Sabrina Ionescu’s origin story, one retold in several commercials, involves her twin brother. As kids, they habitually claimed they didn’t know how to play basketball to older men, only to beat them on the court to win money to spend on 7-Eleven Slurpee drinks.
“Every day, it was just sweeter and sweeter when we would win,” Sabrina Ionescu told Insider.
